Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) wird so sehr mit der Malerei des Impressionismus in Verbindung gebracht, dass die überraschende Vielfalt seines Frühwerks aus dem Blick gerät. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) is so closely associated with Impressionist painting that the surprising diversity of his early work is frequently forgotten. His most important model during these early years was the artist’s mistress, Lise Tréhot, with whom he had a relationship between 1865 and 1872. After posing for a large group of prominent early works, including Woman in a Garden and En été (both 1868), Lise turned her back on the Bohemian lifestyle in favor of a bourgeois marriage. The paintings created between 1864 and the end of the following decade show the broad spectrum of Renoir’s art and the development of his artistic vocabulary, including the Impressionist phase. This is the first extensive examination of the painter’s early oeuvre and the strong influence of his close friendships with other artists, such as Éd0uard Manet, Claude Monet, Frédéric Bazille, and Alfred Sisley. Ce documentaire accompagnant l’exposition Renoir au XXème siècle aux Galeries nationales jusqu'au 4 janvier 2010, est consacré à l'œuvre de maturité de Pierre-Auguste Renoir, des années qui demeurent aujourd’hui contestées et finalement, mal connues.
Pour lui rendre sa place légitime, celle d’un précurseur résolument ancré dans le XIXème siècle et largement tourné vers le XXème, la réalisatrice Cathie Lévy a choisi le mode d’une invitation au voyage plutôt qu’un portrait du peintre, en l’accompagnant dans un itinéraire balisé par des œuvres majeures -les siennes et celles des « anciens »-, ses lieux de création, les correspondances, les photos inédites et aussi les extraits de films.
L'évolution de son art, entre 1890 et sa mort en 1919, entre ses années de consécration et sa rupture avec le mouvement impressionniste, a laissé une empreinte incontestable que l’on retrouve aujourd’hui chez Matisse, Bonnard ou encore Denis.
Un éclairage particulier sur les dernières années de création de Pierre-Auguste Renoir, loin de l’image de « peintre du bonheur », qui rend à l’artiste sa place véritable dans l’évolution artistique.


This documentary, in relation to the exhibition Renoir in the 20th Century at the Galeries nationales until 4 January 2010 is devoted to the mature collection of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, a period of the artist’s life that remains disputed and little known.
Cathie Lévy re-establishes the artist’s rightful place, the place of a pioneer solidly attached to the XIXth century yet significantly turned towards the XXth century. To do so, the director chose to create a genuine invitation to travel instead of a portrait of the artist, by following him along a path marked with major artworks –-his and those of the “Ancients”—, the places were he liked to create, his letters, unpublished pictures and film extracts.
The evolution of Renoir’s art between 1890 and his death in 1919, from the years of his accolade to his rupture with the Impressionist movement, left an unquestionable mark, the influence of which may be found in the works of Matisse, Bonnard or Denis.
A particular light is thrown on Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s last years of creation. Far from the image of a “happiness painter”, it sets the artist back in his real place in artistic evolution.
