Little Theatre of Gestures
Produktbeschreibung
The exhibition Little Theatre of Gestures is about changes. Changes that we make to ourselves or to our surroundings. It attempts to look at and examine the way we display these changes, the theatricality of objects and bodies, both staged and in daily life.
For this publication artists of the exhibition were interviewed by the curators. The interviews give insight into development and backgrounds of the shown works and the artists have the possibility to comment on their work.
The artists Kutlug Ataman, Inaki Bonillas, Gerard Byrne, Jay Chung & Q Takeki Maeda, Rodney Graham, Hilary Lloyd, Kirsten Pieroth and Susanne M. Winterling use a variety of media to document identity and gender through subtle and staged gestures. Twelve hand-coloured lithographs by Isaac Mendes Belisario (born 1795 in Kingston, JM: died 1849 in London) form a turning point in the exhibition: created in Jamaica in 1838, Sketches of Character portray masquerades as well as tradesmen and labourers. The exhibition is presented in cooperation with Malmö Kunsthall.
